Horn Lake Sod: Fresh-Cut Lawns From a Farm Just Down Hwy 51

Horn Lake has been a city since 1973, and it has grown into one of DeSoto County's larger communities, with more than 26,000 residents at the 2020 census. That means a little of everything for lawns: established yards in DeSoto Village and around Kentwood, newer homes off Nail Road and Tulane Road, rentals that need a refresh before the next tenant, and commercial frontage along Goodman Road. Paramount Sod Farm grows Tifway 419 Bermuda and Zeon Zoysia on our farm in Hernando and cuts it fresh to order, so Horn Lake homeowners, landscapers, and builders get sod that was in the field the same day or the day before.

Why Horn Lake Buys Local Sod

U.S. 51 runs along much of Horn Lake's eastern side and leads straight south to our farm. That short trip matters. Fresh sod has a short shelf life, and Mississippi State University Extension advises laying it promptly and keeping pallets shaded and moist until it goes down. When you buy from a farm 20 minutes away, you can schedule a cut date, pick it up or have it delivered, and have it watered in the same day.

Choosing Between Tifway 419 and Zeon for a Horn Lake Yard

Sunny yard that gets used hard? Tifway 419 Bermuda is the workhorse. It is a hybrid bermudagrass that MSU Extension describes as having good wear tolerance and quick recovery, and it is the standard choice for full-sun lawns, ball fields, and commercial sites. It needs full sun to look its best. MSU Extension notes bermudagrass needs close to eight hours of direct sun.

Mature trees or a shady side yard? Zeon Zoysia is our premium grass. It is fine-bladed, dense, and deep green, and zoysia handles moderate shade better than bermuda (MSU Extension puts it at about six hours of sun). The tradeoff: zoysia spreads slowly, so worn spots take longer to fill back in. It does best in front yards and areas with lighter foot traffic.

Both? Plenty of homeowners put Zeon in the front yard and Tifway 419 in a sunny backyard where the kids and dogs play. Read our full Zeon vs. Bermuda comparison or call and we'll talk it through.

Pickup and Delivery

By road, central Horn Lake is about 13–14 miles from our farm, roughly 20–25 minutes. Most of the drive is straight up Hwy 51, then a short hop west on Goodman Road. Farm pickup is available at 4305 Hwy 51 S in Hernando during business hours. Delivery is available too. Our truck carries a piggyback forklift, so pallets are set down where you need them. We deliver within Mississippi only. Call to schedule delivery with your cut date.

Installation

Installation is available. Tell us the size of the area and what's growing there now, and we'll talk through options. For full-yard replacements on open lots, our 42″ big rolls (about 42″ × 102′, roughly 360 sq ft each) are installed by machine. Hand-laid pallets of 16″ × 24″ pieces work better in fenced backyards and narrow side yards. If you're laying it yourself, see our Install Guide and our Sod Care Guide for the first 30 days of watering and mowing.

Patch or Full Yard? Sizing It Up

  • By the piece: each 16″ × 24″ piece covers about 2.7 sq ft, good for bare spots and dog paths
  • ¼ pallet: about 112 sq ft · ½ pallet: about 225 sq ft
  • Full pallet: about 450 sq ft (171 pieces)
  • Big roll: about 360 sq ft

A typical Horn Lake front yard of 40′ × 30′ is 1,200 sq ft. Divide by 450 and you get 2.7, so order 3 pallets. A 60′ × 50′ backyard is 3,000 sq ft, or 6.7 pallets, so order 7. MSU Extension suggests ordering about 5% extra to cover cuts around beds, walks, and curves. Our sod prices page has more yard-size math, and the sod calculator will do it for you.

Before You Lay Sod in Horn Lake

  • Kill and clear the old turf. Remove weeds and old grass so the new sod touches bare soil.
  • Test your soil. MSU Extension soil tests are available through the DeSoto County Extension office. They will tell you whether lime is needed (MSU recommends lime when soil pH is below 6).
  • Grade away from the house. Rake the area smooth so water drains away from foundations and doesn't pond in low spots.
  • Water immediately. Start watering while you're still laying pieces, and soak until the soil under the sod is soft.

Horn Lake Sod FAQ

How far is Paramount from Horn Lake?

About 13–14 miles, roughly 20–25 minutes from central Horn Lake, mostly on Hwy 51.

Can I buy just a few pieces to patch my lawn?

Yes. We sell by the piece, by the ¼ or ½ pallet, and by the full pallet. Call for pricing on anything smaller than a full pallet.

What grows best under the big trees in an older neighborhood?

Zeon Zoysia tolerates moderate shade better than Tifway 419. Dense, all-day shade is hard on any warm-season grass, so call and describe your yard.

Can a full pallet fit in my pickup?

Be careful. MSU Extension notes a 450 sq ft pallet can weigh as much as a ton, so check your truck or trailer rating, or ask about delivery.

Can I pick up on a Saturday?

Yes. We're open Saturday 8am–12pm. Call ahead to confirm availability.
