Walls Sod: Fresh-Cut Lawns for Northwest DeSoto County
Walls sits in the northwest corner of DeSoto County, where the bluffs drop off into the Mississippi Delta. The town was first called Alpika. It was renamed Walls in 1906 after Capt. June Walls, and it counted 1,351 residents in the 2020 census. Around it, Delta farm fields still grow cotton, soybeans, rice, and corn, and new homes keep going up between Walls and Lake Cormorant. Paramount Sod Farm grows Tifway 419 Bermuda and Zeon Zoysia in Hernando and cuts it fresh to order for Walls homeowners, builders, and landscapers.

Why Walls Buys Local Sod
Fresh sod has a short shelf life. Mississippi State University Extension advises laying it promptly and keeping pallets shaded and moist until they go down. Our farm is about half an hour from Walls, so your sod can be cut, loaded, and in the ground the same day. You can also ask the growers which variety fits your yard, your sun, and your soil.
Choosing Between Tifway 419 and Zeon for a Walls Yard
Wide-open, sunny lot? Much of the land around Walls is flat, open Delta ground with few trees. That is ideal for Tifway 419 Bermuda. It's a hybrid bermudagrass with good wear tolerance and fast recovery, and MSU Extension notes bermudagrass handles clay soils and tolerates being submerged better than other turfgrasses. That helps on low, flat lots after a heavy rain. It needs full sun, close to eight hours a day by MSU Extension's guidance.
Shade trees or a showcase front yard? Zeon Zoysia is our premium grass, a fine-bladed, dense, deep-green turf that handles moderate shade better than bermuda (about six hours of sun). One caution for Walls: MSU Extension says zoysiagrasses do not grow well in clay or poorly drained sites. If your yard holds water, fix the grade first or choose Tifway 419 for the low spots.

Installation
Installation is available. Tell us the size of the area and what's on it now, and we'll talk through options. On big, open new-construction lots, our 42″ big rolls (about 42″ × 102′, roughly 360 sq ft each) go down quickly by machine. Pallets of hand-laid 16″ × 24″ pieces are easier around beds, fences, and tight spots. Laying it yourself? Read our Install Guide, then follow our Sod Care Guide for the first 30 days of watering and mowing.
Patch, Yard, or New Build? Sizing It Up
- By the piece: each 16″ × 24″ piece covers about 2.7 sq ft, good for bare spots
- ¼ pallet: about 112 sq ft · ½ pallet: about 225 sq ft
- Full pallet: about 450 sq ft (171 pieces)
- Big roll: about 360 sq ft
A new-build yard of 80′ × 60′ is 4,800 sq ft. Divide by 450 for 10.7 pallets, so order 11, or about 14 big rolls by machine. MSU Extension suggests ordering about 5% extra for cuts and edges. See our sod prices page for more yard sizes, or use the sod calculator.

Tips for Flat Delta Lots
- Grade for drainage first. On flat ground, even a slight slope away from the house keeps water from pooling under new sod.
- Test your soil. An MSU Extension soil test is available through the DeSoto County Extension office, and tells you whether lime is needed (MSU recommends lime when pH is below 6).
- Water right away, but don't drown it. MSU Extension says to keep the soil under new sod soft but not oozing during the first week.
- Expect wind. Open lots dry out faster, so check new sod often during the first two weeks.
