Nesbit Sod: Fresh-Cut Grass About 10 Minutes From the Farm

Nesbit is about as close to our fields as you can get. The old railroad community north of Hernando had its own post office as early as 1869, under the name Nesbits Station. It became part of the City of Hernando through annexation in 1998. Most folks still call it Nesbit, and it still has its own 38651 ZIP code. Paramount Sod Farm grows Tifway 419 Bermuda and Zeon Zoysia on Hwy 51 S in Hernando and cuts it fresh to order, so a Nesbit lawn can go from our field to your yard in an afternoon.

Why Nesbit Buys Local Sod

Fresh sod has a short shelf life. Mississippi State University Extension advises laying it promptly and keeping pallets shaded and moist until they're down. From Nesbit, our farm is a short drive down Hwy 51, about the same route the old plank road took through here in the 1850s. You can pick up in the morning, lay it before the afternoon heat, and water it in the same day. You can also talk to the people who grew it about which variety fits your yard.

Choosing Between Tifway 419 and Zeon for a Nesbit Yard

Nesbit has a mix of subdivision lots, older homes along Old Hwy 51, and larger tracts out toward Pleasant Hill Road and Malone Road. That mix usually decides the grass.

Open, sunny lot or acreage? Tifway 419 Bermuda is built for it. It is a hybrid bermudagrass with good wear tolerance and fast recovery, and it's the standard for full-sun lawns and sports fields. On big, open areas, our 42″ big rolls of Tifway 419 go down fast with an installation machine. It needs full sun. MSU Extension notes bermudagrass needs close to eight hours of direct sun.

Mature trees and a shaded front yard? Zeon Zoysia is our premium grass. It's fine-bladed, dense, and deep green, and it handles moderate shade better than bermuda (MSU Extension puts zoysia at about six hours of sun). It spreads slowly, so it fills worn areas more slowly than Tifway. That makes it best for showcase front yards and lighter-traffic areas.

Pickup and Delivery

By road, central Nesbit is about 7 miles from our farm, roughly 10–15 minutes straight up Hwy 51 to Nesbit Road. Farm pickup is available at 4305 Hwy 51 S in Hernando during business hours. Delivery is available too. Our truck carries a piggyback forklift that sets pallets down where you need them, which helps on a long driveway or a back lot. Installation

Installation is available. Tell us how much area you have and what's on it now, and we'll talk through options. Big rolls (about 42″ × 102′, roughly 360 sq ft each) need machine installation and are the efficient choice for large, open areas. Patch, Yard, or Acreage? Sizing It Up

• By the piece: each 16″ × 24″ piece covers about 2.7 sq ft, good for bare spots
• ¼ pallet: about 112 sq ft · ½ pallet: about 225 sq ft
• Full pallet: about 450 sq ft (171 pieces)
• Big roll: about 360 sq ft

A 70′ × 50′ front yard is 3,500 sq ft. That's 7.8 pallets, so order 8. A quarter-acre of open lawn (about 10,890 sq ft) works out to 24.2 pallets, or about 31 big rolls. A Few Tips for Nesbit Lawns

• Test before you lay. An MSU Extension soil test is available through the DeSoto County Extension office. It tells you whether you need lime (MSU recommends lime when pH is below 6).
• Watch your drainage. Grade the soil so water moves away from the house and doesn't pool in low corners.
• Plan your water source. Big yards and acreage need hoses or sprinklers that reach every section the day the sod goes down. New sod needs water right away.
• Don't spray weed killer on new sod. MSU Extension advises against preemergence herbicides on newly laid sod.

Check your trailer rating first. MSU Extension notes a 450 sq ft pallet can weigh as much as a ton. Delivery is also available.
